【chapter one】
The light of my computer screen reflects onto my eyes as I read through lines of digital text. I feverishly click through the dialogue of the various characters, devouring every word the sprites utter like candy. Danganronpa has been my obsession for years, but my favorite game has always been the second one. The ultimates are so colorful and diverse and the storyline is incredibly complex, yet somehow easy to understand. I can't count the amount of times I've played it.
Right as the first class trial is coming to an end, an odd notification pops up on my screen.
Hello there! We have recognized you as one of the most avid and devoted players of the game, and have thus decided to give you access to an exclusive mod. Would you like to play it?
Yes/No
Because I'm not insane, I click the latter. Immediately after I do so, the letters begin to glitch and morph. It now reads:
Yes/[̲̅Y][̲̅e][̲̅s]
Panicking, I click the first option. Is it a bad decision? Yes! However, the second button looks like it came directly out of digital hell and I am too scared shitless to leave the game. If I did, it would most likely do far worse than cause a minor malfunction. If refusing to participate wasn't an option on the screen, then they must have taken precautions to make sure that I couldn't simply turn my computer off. To be fair, I'm relying on the knowledge I've obtained from novels and fanfictions, but it is the only reference I have to go off of at the moment. School doesn't teach you what measures to take when some sort of cryptic message pops up on your favorite game, after all.
The screen begins to glow. It is soft at first, almost like sunlight filtering through a white curtain, but it progressively brightens to an almost blinding point. I grab a random book off of a nearby shelf and position it in front of my eyes in a desperate attempt to block out the burning rays, but to no avail. I can feel my mass rearranging itself. Some parts of my body are being taken away from and others are being added to. My flesh smoothes out and reshapes itself, my skin following suit. My eyes grow and my bone readjusts. All the while, great pain tears through my entire body.
Just before I lose consciousness from the agony, the alterations stop. My legs give out from under me, and I collapse onto the floor, panting and quivering. Drool drips out of my gaping jaw and my eyes pulsate to the point of intense aching.
"Hello!"
I jolt up, frantically looking around to find the unknown speaker. "Show yourself, fuckface!" I rasp, nearly vomiting in the process.
"So mean!" the voice whines. "You'd
think that someone as devoted to the fandom as you would recognize the voice of your beloved headmaster."
"When your entire anatomy has been altered in the most unpleasant way possible you tend to momentarily forget a few things," I croak, wiping the saliva off of my lips.
They cackle. "You're spirited. I like that. Here's a hint: It's punishment time!"
My eyes widen in shock and realization. "Monokuma?"
The demonic bear steps forward, bowing gracefully. "Yep! The one and only."
"How can this be?" I say. "You're an entirely fictional entity! Am I in some sort of self-insert Wattpad fanfiction?"
He laughs. "Girly, this is Danganronpa. Anything can happen here!"
I blanch. "That is by far one of the laziest and most enigmatic explanations I have quite possibly ever heard. Breaking the fourth wall and transporting me to another dimension is on an entirely different level of implausibility."
All I receive is a silly little laugh. "What can I say? This is an anime world. Your logic doesn't apply here."
I shrug in acknowledgement. It seems he won't give anything away at this moment. While I still have quite a few questions, I assume that they won't be answered just yet. All I can do is accept the information I've been offered.
"Anyways," the monochrome teddy drawls. "I have a few bits of information that you should know before venturing out."
I nod, prompting him to continue.
"First off, I'll tell you about the conditions you're in. Essentially, you're stuck in this place until every single trial is finished and hope has won. Don't assume it'll be a simple task though. Your very existence alters the timeline quite significantly, so you may have to deal with a few unexpected murders."
I hesitantly nod, sighing shakingly. "Okay. I understand where you're coming from."
"Fantastic. Now, this game wouldn't be nearly as fun without giving you an awesome talent, so without further adieu, I'll reveal it to you- oh, that rhymes," he says. "Anyways, you are now the SHSL Darling!"
I raise an eyebrow. "SHSL Darling? The hell does that mean? That is one of the most stereotypical talents I have ever heard of, and I've seen quite a few awful concepts in my time. I really am the protagonist of a self-insert Wattpad fanfiction, aren't I? This is the type of ability only a shitty teenage fanfiction writer could come up with."
"Hey girly, have some respect for your headmaster! Kids these days are so snobby!" he screeches, fuming with anger. "You should feel honored that I took time out of my day to think this up for you. I could have just pegged you as another lucky student, you know."
I sigh in exasperation. "Fuck you, man. You legit just cringe-ified my talent."
"Jesus kid, you're bitter as a patch of expired citrus. I'm blowing this joint! Your uniform is on the bed, and your classmates are waiting in the park. I've informed them that they've been getting a new classmate, and by the looks of it, they're pretty curious to know who you are. Peace!" And with that, he disappears.
I stare at the spot where he once stood, dumbfounded and in shock. This was almost too much to take in all at once. I take a few deep breaths to calm my nerves. I then slowly stand and analyze my surroundings. I seem to be in one of the island's many cottages, though I don't think I'm located in one of the pre-existing ones. It has the basic features of all the normal rooms, but like all of the interior designs, it has its own little quirks and modifications to match my talent.
The general color scheme consists of baby blue, sunny yellow, and lilac. Shockingly enough, there is no pink in sight. It honestly relieves me, as pink is far too stereotypical and almost too fitting. I mean, I love that colour, but being uwu'd any more would probably end me on the spot. There was the basic furniture of course, such as the standard grey sofa, the white canopy above the bed, the TV, and the security camera. As I'd mentioned before, there were custom decorations as well like lacy white blinds, a mahogany table by my bedside, a fluffy daffodil coloured carpet, a powder blue vanity, and a bookshelf stuffed with shojo manga. I also notice a pile of neatly folded clothing laying on top of the comforter.
That must be the uniform monokuma mentioned.
I lift the top item. It falls open and reveals a chiffon blouse that perfectly matches the color of the vanity. I bring it up to my shoulders, glancing downwards to see if it'll fit. To nobody's surprise, it does. Monokuma is essentially all-knowing, so it's more than likely that he already knew my exact measurements before sending me here. Setting it back down next to the others, I pick up the next item. It is a puffy yellow skirt that reaches just barely below my knees. I can't help but think that it came right out of the 1950's. Next in the stack is a pair of demonia boots with snowy leather and blue heels. I'm not quite sure why I would ever need that sort of shoe. A pair of flats would have been far more fitting, but I don't question it. Last of all, there is a pure white bow and a star brooch. It's whimsical, cute, and oddly suitable. I've stated this before, but I would have expected it to be some sort of gaudy pink monstrosity. I'm glad that Monokuma chose something unobtrusively beautiful .
I snatch up the clothes and quickly slip them on. The material is unrealistically soft and flowy. I run my hands along the fabric, relishing the feeling of the silky material against my skin.
Wait, this is not the time to fuck around and lose focus. I have classmates to meet and a whole-ass killing game to cope with.
I slap my cheeks, hoping to sharpen my senses. "Kay, there's no time to lose!"
Taking a deep ass breath, I hesitantly step outside.
"Well, good luck to me lol"
I'm so sorry that you had to wait this long for the publication of this chapter! There were quite a few issues going on in my life (to be honest, there still are), but what matters is that I'm done at last. Thank you so much for your patience. Bye!
Edit: I just stepped in to fix up a few particularly cringeworthy flaws.
